Of course, you’ll want to make sure that you exercise them enough so they don’t get bored or frustrated.
Another dog that’s at home in the water, the Poodle is an easy-to-train hypoallergenic dog that’s fabulous with family. These dogs are very protective of their humans, and they’re also quite adaptable to new surroundings. Plus, these guys love to make friends — with everyone.
The ‘fancy’ haircut this breed is known for wasn’t just for show, it served a purpose — to improve buoyancy and protect them from the chilly water. Admittedly, their coat is pretty high maintenance, but clipping it short can make it more manageable.

The Spanish Water Dog is hypoallergenic and a versatile canine — they were naturals at two jobs — herding flocks out to pastures, or hunting water birds. And, in some coastal areas of Spain, they would even work on fishing boats as the skipper’s mate.

The English Water Spaniel is, unfortunately, a breed that’s no longer in existence — records suggest they sadly died out in the 1930s.
These dogs started with similar traits to the Collie and the Poodle, but over the years, they grew to be a lot more similar to other Spaniel breeds. The English Water Dog was also able to enter the water with such stealth they wouldn’t disturb anything, which is quite a skill.
They were super easy to train and were able to perform a lot of physical activity in a day with no break! And, their loyal and affectionate nature also meant there was no way they’d leave you stranded and would protect you at all costs.
Although this dog has been extinct since the 19th century, they still live on through the Golden and Curly-Coated Retriever. This breed’s demise was mainly to do with their involvement in producing these two dogs.
Native to Berwick-upon-Tweed in northern England, the Tweed Spaniel is described as being a proficient swimmer and extremely athletic. Their coat was a liver brown color and curly. They would be considered similar in appearance to that of a Golden Retriever or Irish Water Spaniel. Hence, there’s no wonder, today’s Golden Retrievers are always up for walkies.
With references to working with fishermen, as well as hunting for wildfowl. Yet, despite the breed’s talents, this water dog breed wasn’t very well known outside of its native country.
Originating from the Great Lakes, the American Water Spaniel is certainly great at swimming and hunting — their energy is perfect for the location. They’re happy and outgoing dogs, and very outdoorsy, so you can take them on all your hikes and adventures.
However, you might find your pup is a little unsure when it comes to new people, but that’s completely normal for the breed — make sure you introduce them properly and give them some time. After that, they should be just as friendly as they are with you.
And, while their double coat keeps them warm in the water and all kinds of weather, it does mean you can expect seasonal shedding. Plus, a bored American Water Spaniel is not only an unhappy canine, but could lead to naughty behavior — so keeping them busy is essential.
Hailing from Canada, it’s easy to see why the Labrador is a water dog breed. This muscular and athletic canine has a dense, water-resistant, double coat and a sturdy tail that acts as a rudder — allowing them to turn effortlessly when swimming.
They’re also people dogs and incredibly patient with kids, so ideal for families — but they do shed a lot.
The Labrador’s inherent friendliness and trainability find them being a good fit for therapy dogs and assistance dogs for mobility-challenged, seniors, and so many more. They’re also used as search and rescue dogs because of their athletic build, so they’re certainly an all-rounder when it comes to their jobs!
11. Newfoundland
Another Canadian canine, the Newfoundland water dog breed or “Newfie” is truly a gorgeous giant of a dog. This breed is a four-legged lifeguard, their webbed feet and sheer strength generate powerful swimming strokes, plus they have an in-built desire to protect.
So many people love Newfoundlands and not just because they’re stunning but because they’re patient, gentle, and super affectionate. This dog is certainly a family dog because of their loving and loyal nature. Of course, you’ll want to be careful with young children as the Newfie is so big, but they’ll do their best to love and play nicely with your little ones.
Unfortunately, they’re not hypoallergenic, so if you’re after something allergy-friendly, this may not be the best shout. And, given their sheer size, you’ll need plenty of space.
Another Retriever on our list is the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, which is one of the smallest out there. They’re just as intelligent as their canine cousins and are always in the mood for a cuddle.
Nova Scotias have the most gorgeous crimson coat, but it has a purpose. Ducks mistake them for foxes. And, while distracted — bang! The hunter gets their prize, which would be swiftly retrieved from the water by the Toller.
This is a breed that never seems to get tired. Duck Tolling Retrievers are always looking for something to do, whether that’s running around or playing with you — they always need to burn off steam. But they’re super friendly with kids, adults, and other dogs.

The Golden Retriever is a fun-loving and beautiful dog that was bred to retrieve waterfowl. Thus, don’t be surprised if your Golden has an affinity with water and is keen on playing ‘fetch the ball.’
Unfortunately, these dogs are far from hypoallergenic, so if you’re an allergy sufferer, this is definitely not the dog for you. They have a water-resistant, medium-length double coat that sheds twice a year in the spring and fall.

When the Boykin Spaniel is near water, they’re a skilled hunter/retriever, yet when in the home, they know how to switch off. In fact, an ‘off-duty’ Boykin makes a great house dog.
They’re insanely intelligent and are always ready to learn which makes them super easy to train. However, with that hunting-dog heritage, they’re a better fit for families who can match their energy levels.
Boykins have the hallmark floppy ears of Spaniels, which give them a warm and cuddly appearance. And, these sweet-natured dogs thrive around children and from companionship.
Coming from South Carolina, this breed would work the lakes and swamps of the state for waterfowl and wild turkeys, which is where their webbed feet come in extremely handy.
This furry friend is a supreme duck hunter in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, hence their name. There’s no doubting this history when looking at their build, strength, and temperament. And, funnily enough, their water-repelling coat works pretty much the same way as duck feathers do.
These dogs love structure in their lives, so keep this in mind while exercising them, and taking them through your day-to-day life.
Training is another area to be aware of. While they’ll listen, at times, they’ll decide to do their own thing. And, although they’re loving with their pack, Chesapeakes can be stand-offish around unfamiliar faces.
Believe it or not, the Curly-Coated Retriever is one of the oldest Retriever breeds, as well as being the tallest.
They were bred to fetch game from land and water. As a result, they were very popular among English poachers, hunters, and gamekeepers alike. They still use their strong body and skills today — as therapy dogs and drug-sniffing dogs.
When they’re not working hard, the super-friendly Retriever breed trait shines through. They’re also happy to kick back and relax inside the home.
Curlys are super loyal to their family, but you may find they’re slightly shy when it comes to meeting new faces, or other dogs. You’ll want to properly socialize them early on.
A large, shaggy dog that wouldn’t hesitate to jump in a river after an otter. They were so good at it, Otterhounds decimated the otter population in the UK. Hence, hunting of these river mammals was banned.
These guys were developed from Bloodhounds and have been around for at least 500 years. And, they’re quite rare — apparently, there are less than 1000 in existence today.

The Wetterhoun or Frisian Water Dog was originally bred to hunt otters and today is a rare breed that makes an amazing companion dog. They’re high-energy dogs that require vigorous daily exercise and they love to swim.
These dogs are intelligent, yet they have a mind of their own, so you need to show them that you are the leader of the pack. However, they’re friendly and good-natured, which means they’re great family dogs. They also make really good guard dogs due to their sharp guarding instinct.
Dutch Water Dogs have a coarse, curly coat that requires very little grooming except for the occasional brush and check of their ears. However, they aren’t hypoallergenic, so aren’t a great fit for allergy sufferers.
